Ilnesses and Requirements

For the well-being of the children and out of respect for families, we ask that you comply with these requirements.

List of illnesses requiring EXCLUSION from the activities of the Temiscaming Family Center.

Gastroenteritis: Diarrhoea, i.e. loose or watery stools of an increased frequency (2 times the normal frequency or more) Nausea and vomiting. May be accompanied by fever. Exclude until symptoms have COMPLETELY STOPPED 24 HOURS. The child must be continent and not have a fever.

Whooping cough: Persistent cough (more than 2 weeks), often in fits, with inspiratory wheezing (cockcrow) or vomiting. Exclude up to 5 days after initiation of treatment. Untreated child: exclude up to 3 weeks after cough onset or until cough stops.

Pharyngitis, Streptococcal tonsillitis and scarlet fever: Fever, sore throat, red throat, cervical lymph nodes that have increased in size and are painful to the touch. Scarlet fever: Redness with a sandpaper appearance, especially on the neck, chest, abdomen, thighs, whitening on pressure. Exclude for up to 24 hours after starting treatment, or until healing if the child is not receiving treatment.

 Impetigo: Crusted, sometimes oozing or purulent lesions, especially on the face, especially on the chin and around the mouth. May be found elsewhere on the body. Exclude for up to 24 hours after starting treatment, or until healing if the child is not receiving treatment.

Rubella: Redness that begins on the face and then spreads to the whole body, fever, lymph nodes enlarged.  Always get confirmation of the diagnosis from a doctor. Exclude for up to 7 days after the onset of redness.

 Scabies: Furrows between the fingers, toes, or wrists, elbows. abdomen, genitals, thighs, buttocks. Itching especially at night or during naps. Exclude until the next day from the application of the treatment.

 Lice: Presence of lice on the scalp, itching or lesions caused by scratching.  Exclude until first application of treatment. Exclude again or maintain exclusion if live lice persist after treatment.

Flu and COVID-19: Fever, cough, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, runny nose, and nasal congestion.  Exclude until the child no longer has a fever.

 

Other illnesses where exclusion is NOT NECESSARY

Conjunctivitis: Red eye, clear or yellowish discharge, eyelids that may be glued.  Exclusion is not necessary except in the event of an epidemic.

Chickenpox: Multiple vesicles (small water blisters) distributed all over the body, itching, low grade fever.  Do not exclude unless the child’s general condition does not allow him or her to participate in the activities.

Foot-Hand-Month: Fever and redness in the form of blisters or ulcers in the mouth, hands, and feet. May have irritability and diarrhea.  Do not exclude unless the child’s general condition does not allow him or her to participate in the activities.
